If a game takes #1 position in both Android and Apple app stores for multiple years, then it’s only natural to assume that it’s a real gaming gem. Clash of Clans has managed to do exactly this, attracting millions of players from around the world to become part of clan wars within the game. Even if you didn’t have the chance to play, you’ve undoubtedly heard of this famous title for mobile devices. Let’s take a look back on the game and see what makes it so unique.
Thank You, Finland!
It seems that loads of good stuff for our mobiles comes from Finland, starting from Nokia and their amazing phones up to games like Angry Birds created by Rovio Entertainment. It doesn’t come as a surprise then that a Finnish development studio Supercell is the creative team behind Clash of Clans.
At first glance, COC seems like just another world-building game that will ultimately require decades of time or some money to get ahead of other players. However, it’s different this time around. Yes, Clash of Clans will require you to invest some time (or money, if you prefer), but the whole point is that it awards patience. Spend enough hours building your clan, and you will be proud of the success you have achieved.
Plenty of Architectural Work to Be Done
As it’s the case in most games of this type, you start virtually with nothing. You have the task of building your village and taking command of your warring tribe. You will need to build all the structures your population might need. Soon, you’ll see that you need to make a gold mine to acquire money, a town hall to build leadership, an army camp so that your warriors have a place to be in, and there is even an elixir collector used to accumulate additional resource.
As you progress through the game, you will unlock other building types and, once you perfect your skills enough, you will be able to set your camp in the Clan Castle. Once you take over the castle, you can make alliances with other clans (players), as well as create various units and improve your barracks. There is a wide variety of different units at your disposal, and each one can become the one that will win the battle for you.
The first couple of times on the battlefield you will play against the computer. Don’t be fooled because these games are only there to teach you a thing or two about the basics. The first time around it would only take to have enough Barbarians, and then you need to build enough archer units. At that point, you will think that you are breezing through the game.
One Thing at a Time…
And you will encounter a barricade with a big wall where the enemy has also placed some cannons. Your units are having troubles tearing down the wall in time, while the archers are getting massacred by guns firing at them.
Motivated by revenge, you start upgrading your barracks and units. Not a lot of time will pass, and you will have Wall Breakers and Giants at your disposal. These should help you go through that damn wall and inflict some damage on those cannons that killed your archers.
Strategy Really Matters in Clash Of Clans
At this point, the game becomes more complicated. You will unlock new units, which are more sophisticated than the ones you have up to then, and you will have to think about which kind of army you should build and which elements within your camp should be your priority.
It’s not just about the number of troops either. You will need to think about your tactics because it is crucial when and where you will send your troops, as well as predicting how they will interact with the enemy. You need to think like this – if a lot of cannons are placed at the enemy’s entrance, then the best way to go is to send in your aerial units and attack from above. If you notice the bomb traps at the back, then the right way to go is to attack the walls on the side.
The Real Deal
All of the battles where you play the AI are only preparing you for the real thing – fighting other players from around the world. The match-making system is very good, and you won’t encounter opponents that are much stronger or much weaker than you. That ensures you won’t get bored or frustrated when you have to fight someone you just cannot defeat. However, there is a good chance to see your base destroyed the first time you enter the battlefield. You will have the opportunity to see the replay of the fight to see what went wrong and you can iron out the mistakes by rebuilding. Once your troops are better prepared, you can head out for revenge and show who’s the boss.
The tactics are what keeps the game interesting. Will you focus on protecting your base by coming up with a better defensive system than your opponent or you want to try to exploit their weaknesses by thinking of the best attack possible? Each enemy is unique, especially once you advance through the beginning levels, and there is a lot of fun hiding in battles.
It’s Great, But It Is Not Perfect
When you see that Clash of Clans ranks as the best game on both iOS and Android, you might think that it is perfect. The truth is that no game is ideal and COC is no exception. However, the issues that it has are only present here and there, and they don’t seriously affect playing. Plus, the developers are constantly releasing patches and updates that fix the occurring bugs.
One thing that can be annoying is that the game can mistakenly think that you are scrolling across your camps like you want to move a structure. The iOS users also reported that returning to iPhone’s home screen means that the game will need to load all over again. That is not a big issue, considering that Clash of Clans loading is short.
The Perfect “Freemium” Model
The game also suffers from that freemium illness called greediness of the developers. After a while, it will take some time to build up your structures, so you will have to make unwanted pauses from the game before you can move forward. Naturally, you can significantly shorten this period by investing some real cash in your village, but if you want to keep things free, you will have plenty of time to work on your strategy while waiting for your buildings to complete. That being said, I feel obligated to mention that the system is not completely unfair, but you can still make faster progress and play the game more often if you use real money.
COC is not a game that has graphics as a primary focus, so you shouldn’t expect an extraordinary game in this area. Instead, there are some beautiful animations, and the characters are nicely designed. The sound also adequately fits the surroundings in most cases, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary.
Clash of Clans is an online multiplayer game, so it doesn’t come as strange that the social component can play a valuable role. We previously mentioned that you can access clans (alliances) of players once you reach a certain level. The game then puts you in the cycle of preparation and war days. Whenever you decide to attack a member of the rival clan, you will get stars depending on how successful you were. You can use a maximum of two attacks per one war and, at the end of the day, the clan with the bigger number of stars wins. The rewards are resources you can use in the game, such as elixir, dark elixir, and gold elixir.
Where It Stands Now?
Clash of Clans celebrated the three-year anniversary in April 2017, and it seems that the game hasn’t suffered in popularity over time. In fact, hundreds of thousands of players around the world are still a part of clan wars, and the game is always being updated with minor improvements. Over the course of three years, Clash of Clans has had over 100,000,000 downloads only via Google Play store, which clearly shows the popularity of the game. Due to technology advancements, the game no longer supports some older operating systems, such as iOS 7, and works best on newer phones. That is because the developers are trying to keep up with time and give their best to offer a game that will keep existing players, as well as attract new ones to join the party.
If you want to become part of the world’s most famous clan wars, you can download Clash of Clans for free via your iOS or Android device. Don’t think that you will need a lot of time to get ahold of the game and find your place in the clan world. You will quickly be able to learn the mechanics and enjoy COC on your mobile phone.
