It was a while ago when the Steam community got the chance to vote for the most successful games in 2018. The users of the platform voted across eight different categories, but the one that everyone was most interested in was the Game of the Year. Ultimately, the award went to the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a release that resurrected the Battle Royale genre.
The interesting thing to note is that the winner of the main award for 2018 is a game that wasn’t even released during that year. The first time PUBG became available to players was in Spring 2017 when the Early Access variant was released. Even the full version was released in December 2017, but that wasn’t a problem for PUBG to maintain its popularity throughout the next year. There lies the explanation of why it was the game of PUBG Corporation that won the main prize.
Valve decided to award the developers who succeeded to make something special in the world of virtual reality. According to players, it was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR that deserved to be pronounced as the VR Game of the Year in 2018. Superhot, Fallout 4, Beat Saber, and VRChat were also among the nominees.
Labor of Love is a category of games that provided plenty of interesting new content and managed to retain their popularity over time. It is not surprising that Grand Theft Auto V received this award considering how popular it is among the players for years now. Dota 2 was not too far behind, as well as No Man’s Sky and Stardew Valley.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege won the Better with Friends award for the ultimate co-op experience. That may come as a bit of surprise as CS: GO and Payday 2 were left behind. A family-friendly game Overcooked! 2 also made this list.
As for other categories, The Witcher 3 received the award for the Best Environment while Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the game that featured the Best Alternate History. In the category of having the Most Fun with a Machine, Rocket League was pronounced the winner in front of Euro Truck Simulator 2.
The community also honoured CD PROJEKT RED with the award for the Best Developer in 2017. Many other gigantic studios, such as Ubisoft, Betsheda, and Rockstar were left behind, which makes the success of CDPR even bigger.
