MechWarrior 5 seems like it is having issues with development progress. That is what you could have concluded when the game was postponed even though it was supposed to release in December. Fortunately, Piranha Games confirmed that they are still working on the project and they even provided a new official release date. Although it is still far away, the fans will be glad to know that the date is set and it is September 10, 2019.
The full name of the game is MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and it was presented at this year’s Mechcon held in Vancouver, Canada. The visitors had the chance to see some gameplay action footage and everyone was delighted.
Apart from the fact that the graphics seem astonishing, the gameplay seems fun, too. Some of the visitors had the chance to play a co-op demo in the mode that involves four players competing against others. What was particularly fun was that Piranha Games brought unique “mech pods” that they constructed for the purpose of this event. The pod featured surround sound system, rumble chair, huge 4K screens, and joysticks – in a word, everything you need to play the game.
There’s Still Work to Be Done
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries looks and feels amazing, but it also seems like the developers have a long way to go when it comes to improving the AI. Regardless, it is nice to see some real progress being made. It is even better that the developers seem to be aware of the issues and the reason why they pushed the release date is that they want to iron them out.
Despite its co-op mode(s), it will be predominantly a solo game. This is supported by the fact that the progress is only memorized at the host machine which means there is no real motivation for others to help you during the missions. Unless, of course, you want to have some fun with your friends.
Regardless, the elements of strategy and the battles seem impressive and we are looking forward to seeing further development of MechWarrior 5.
