The first award ceremony for the best games in 2018 was held. It was organized by the Golden Joystick and it seems like they made the only reasonable choice when it comes to Game of the Year. Although many expected it to be Red Dead Redemption 2, which would also be deserved, the best title award went to Fortnite.
Not everything is about quality, but about the attention you generate and the number of players you attract. Although it had the advantage of being available to gamers for longer, there is no doubt that Fortnite set the bar extremely high in many categories and became a true phenomenon. That has plenty to do with marketing, too. Rockstar will, however, have consolation in the fact that they won the Critics’ Choice Award for RDR 2.
What is more interesting is that the PC Game of the Year award went to Subnautica. This is a simulation of surviving underwater with obvious elements of horrors. It might not have received the same level of attention as its main competitors, but there is no doubt that this is an excellent game.
The Golden Joystick Awards also tried to predict the future, at least based on the current events. This is how Cyberpunk 2077 took the award for the Most Wanted Title, which will undoubtedly put additional pressure on CD Projekt to meet and exceed our expectations.
It seems fair that at least one of the awards went to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, although it is a bit strange that it was the Mobile Game award. The best studio is Sony Santa Monica and God of War is the release with the most impressive storytelling and top visual design and audio, as well as the Game of the Year for PlayStation. Octopath Traveler and Forza Horizon 4 won the best release awards for Nintendo and Xbox respectively.
In the indie category, Dead Cells want the prestigious award for the best game while Monster Hunter: World is at the top for the co-op category. Another important award is the one in the category of “Still Playing” and this one went to the World of Tanks.
