A couple of days back Sony announced the acquisition of Bluepoint Games. Masterminds behind Shadow of the Colossus PS4 remake, and Demon’s Souls Remake released for the PlayStation 5. Both went on to be a financial success, and to gather praise among critics and audiences alike.
This move was rather obvious, as Bluepoint worked closely with Sony for some years now. IGN interviewed the president of Bluepoint Games Marco Thrush, and head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst. They spoke about the future of the studio, and what kind of work is ahead of them.
Some very peculiar wording was used thought the entire interview. “Our next project, we’re working on original content right now. We can’t talk about what that is, but that’s the next step in the evolution for us,” said Thrush. Noticed what I’m referring to? “Original content”. This leaves so much space for interpretation you can really go wild with speculation. If they meant original video games. As in Bluepoint wanted to make their own IP, why not say “we are working on a game”? This is not a one-off thing. The word original content is thrown out a lot during this meeting.
Demon’s Souls Remake DLC – How likelky are we to get it?
Thrush went on to say, that the company was partially creating original content already. He is referring to completely original additions to Demon’s Souls Remake, and Shadow of the Colossus Remake. Where the company threw in a couple of new items while staying faithful to the originals.
When I hear “original content” in the same phrase as “Demon’s Souls Remake” I immediately think of one thing. The sixth Archstone. For those of you who don’t know, Demon Souls originally had 6 Archstones. This basically means six robust zones. But FromSoftware gave up on creating the very last one due to fast-approaching deadlines.
When the remake was announced, many hoped this will be included. But post-development interviews with the Bluepoint heads revealed that they wanted to stay totally faithful to the original. While there was talk about doing it among Bluepoint staff, the plans were dropped. It’s no secret that Bluepoint was working with the support of FromSoftware. It’s not hard to imagine them giving Bluepoint the blessing to create the sixth zone.
And now, Sony has acquired Bluepoint. They will be put to work on an original IP sooner, or later. But if they were to develop a DLC for some existing game, it could be the perfect test. A test meant to gauge how well they fare while creating completely original content. And what better game to revisit, than Demon’s Souls Remake, and its sixth Archstone, waiting to be reforged.
But this is just some speculation. “Original content” could mean virtually anything. They could be working on additions to already existing Sony IPs for all we know. Besides, Demon’s Souls Remake is almost 12 months old. Hardly great timing to release a DLC now. But this theory does have some merit, don’t you think?
