Most Anticipated Games of 2018

The next year is right around the corner. That is why this is the right time for us to take a look at what we can expect in the gaming scene in 2018. There will be a bunch of new games across all genres imaginable. It was not easy to make a selection of releases that we hope will be worth your attention. However, we made our choice, and it’s yours to start reading and imagining how impressive these games will be. We can only hope that those wishes will come true!

Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2018

To make it easier for you to find your way around the article, we divided it into sections. The first one will present the top 10 most anticipated games of 2018. These are all releases you are probably already familiar with, but it doesn’t hurt to remind yourself which games are you looking forward to during the following year.

Far Cry 5

Release Date:  February 27, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Everyone agrees that this is one of the most anticipated games of 2018. Add to that the fact that we can expect its release during the first quarter of the year and it becomes clear why it’s at the top of our list. Ubisoft Montreal is creating the fifth sequel to the Far Cry franchise (an eleventh game in the series overall).

Far Cry 5 won’t change much when it comes to the core concept. You can still expect the first-person shooter and a lot of action while you are exploring the Hope County. It is a fictional region in Montana, USA, where you are sent to arrest preacher Joseph Seed. He founded the Eden’s Gate congregation that violently keeps the residents from contacting with the rest of the world. Several brave locals will help you on your way to stop this religious fanatic in a campaign that can be played solo or in co-op mode.

Vampyr

Release Date: Q1 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

We love games in which choices matter and Vampyr is shaping up to be one of them. You will be playing as Dr. Jonathan Reid, a man who helped save thousands of lives during his career. Unfortunately, he was bitten by a vampire, and he now wakes up in post-war London trying to deal with the fact that he is undead. The game is set up in 1918 during the pandemic of Spanish flu. The developers put the effort it resembling the London of that time faithfully, but you can also expect predetermined fictional locations.

Vampyr is a semi-open world game in which you will communicate with the residents of London, maintain relationships and collect clues that will take them to the game ending. Reid will be fighting with his thirst for blood. However, he is under Hippocratic Oath, and he can’t harm innocents. It’s entirely up to you whether you will send him down the right or wrong path. Keep in mind that each decision you make changes the in-game world. Oh, and you can finish the game without killing anyone.

BattleTech

Release Date: Early 2018

Platforms: PC

If you are a fan of turn-based strategies or board games, there is a chance that you are familiar with the title. BattleTech takes us to 3025 where there is a war between the machinery of vehicles specialized for combat called Mechs. You will jump straight into the middle of this conflict, piloting your vehicle and trying to keep it on its legs while defeating the enemies.

Strategy and tactics will play a crucial role in whether you will come back victorious from the battlefield. However, there will be stuff that you can do on the home front, too. You will be able to upgrade your headquarters, as well as maintain and repair the BattleMechs that were damaged during the combat. The game raised almost $3 million on Kickstarter, and we are looking forward to seeing if the developers will keep up with the expectations.

Tropico 6

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

It has been four years since the last encounter we had with El Presidente. We are looking forward to assuming the role of the governor of a banana republic in the government and construction simulation brought to us by Kalypso Media. The concept of being a dictator won’t change, but the developers announced several new features.

You will have new monuments and bridges to build, but we would prefer to talk about politics. It was to ease to please all factions in the previous installment, which is why Tropico 6 addressed this issue. In the next sequel, you will need to leave out at least one wing from the government. It’s not necessary to mention that that will make things a lot more difficult. We can also expect the political speeches to make their return and some special events that will reflect current issues, such as the walls raised at the border.

System Shock

Release Date: Q2 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Linux, Mac

When Hollywood is doing remakes, they usually don’t do an outstanding job despite having enormous budgets. However, the gaming industry proved that introducing retro hits to the new generation of players is the right way to go. Night Dive Studios took on adjusting the action RPG System Shock to today’s level of technology.

The developers are using Unreal Engine 4 for the remake, which means that we can expect stunning graphics. We can expect them to alter the design of the levels, considering that the creator called the in-game maps “a product that hasn’t aged well in time.” As for the other known details, there will be no multiplayer, but you can still enjoy the single-player campaign. The core of the plot will remain the same, but the team is working on fixing some of the issues that the original System Shock had.

Darksiders 3

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

It has been a while since the second installment in the Darksiders series. THQ had to pronounce bankruptcy, and THQ Nordic acquired the rights to the franchise. In the meantime, they also changed the studio working on the game. Gunfire Games is the creative team behind the new release, and they will work on a story involving Fury.

Fury is the most mysterious and unpredictable of all the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She is a mage that likes magic but also loves using her whip in combat. As you can see from the official trailer, Darksiders 3 will be a third-person adventure with a whole lot of action. Your goal will be to defeat the Seven Deadly Sins. They took control of Earth, and they tore it apart. It’s your task to get things back in order by defeating them across several stunning visual regions of our destroyed planet. If you haven’t played previous games in the series, you don’t need any prior knowledge for DS3. However, there is still time for you to get familiar with the lore, which is incredibly intriguing.

We Happy Few

Release Date: April 13, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

More than a few of us are extremely happy that we finally have a release date for the We Happy Few. The game has been in the early access phase for a while, but it seems far away from done at the moment. Regardless, the concept is incredibly intriguing, and we can’t wait to get the chance to try the full version.

The plot is set in the alternative reality in England in 1960s. The Wellington Wells residents are consistently happy because they are fueled by the Joy drug. However, three of the citizens are refusing to be a part of this delirium, which is why they are not favorites in their city. You will be following the stories of these “Downers,” which are looking to survive and complete their storyline before the entire society collapses. An incredibly intriguing concept by Compulsion Games offers a fascinating mixture of exploration, survival, and storytelling with a brilliant narrative.

Frostpunk

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

If you have played This War of Mine as we did, you definitely can’t wait for 11Bit Studios to publish their next game. In TWOM, you had the task of surviving the war with a couple of persons. But Frostpunk is taking this to the next level and making the first society survival game ever.

It seems that the next ice age is finally here. The few people that managed to survive are gathered around the power source. You are their ruler, and your task is to build a city that will pull you through the cold period. You need to balance between keeping the right infrastructure and making all the right moves to keep your citizens alive and happy. The question is, are you ready to make some tough decisions and how will that affect you as a human being?

Although the developers only planned a PC version, PlayStation Lifestyle considers that suggesting a PS4 version would be in order might lead to a console release.

Sea of Thieves

Release Date: Q1 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One

Microsoft and Rare (yes, the developers of Donkey Kong) joined forces to create a co-op adventure game called Sea of Thieves. As you might have noticed in the previous section, the central perk is that this is a solely multiplayer and shared world game. Groups of players will join forces in looting various islands and finding hidden treasures.

The entire game is based on joint efforts and navigating your pirate ship is no exception. It’s exciting to see one player steering, while the others are firing cannons or hoisting sails. The graphics are cartoonish but immensely likable, and the game seems to have fun as the top priority. As a result, you will also be able to do some weird stuff such as getting shot out of a cannon. Although the game was scheduled for this year, it was delayed to ensure that everything works correctly once it is released.

Metal Gear Survive

Release Date: February 20, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Hideo Kojima left Konami, but the Metal Gear franchise is moving on with its life. Although, we have to admit that the following installment seems to be a bold move that will take the series to a new direction. Metal Gear Survive will focus on multiplayer in which you will face ongoing waves of Wanderers. You will be playing as part of a team that needs to stay alive as long as possible while zombie-like enemies are trying to satisfy their thirst for blood.

The plot is set somewhere after Ground Zeroes and before The Phantom Pain. There is also a solo campaign, in which you will be joined by three computer-controlled teammates to help you achieve your tasks. We are looking forward to seeing how Konami will make the transition of the MGS series from a game that emphasized stealth as a critical factor of success to a release that will focus on shooting as many enemies as possible.

Other Games in 2018 That Will Be Worth Mentioning

The statistics reveal that over 6,000 games get released each year only through Steam. That means it wouldn’t be fair for us to mention less than a dozen of them. Here are some other future releases worth mentioning:

Metro Exodus

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

When Metro 2033 was published in 2010, it marked the start of a series of games based on novels written by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Metro Exodus is the third installment and another FPS release with elements of survival. You can expect a strong narrative, considering the idea is from an award-winning book. We look forward to seeing the mixture of exploration and stealth with high-paced combat once again.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One

We are sorry PlayStation owners, but this is a Microsoft exclusive. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an adventure with elements of a platform in which you will need to solve puzzles to progress. You will open new parts of the in-game world as you complete the tasks (Metroidvania style). According to the information we have, it will be solely single-player.

Hunt: Showdown

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

Hunt: Showdown has a vivid history. Crytek USA formerly was named Vigil Games, and at that time they created Darksiders. They had in mind to create this release as a successor to that franchise, but financial issues led them into bankruptcy instead. A couple of years later, Hunt: Showdown was revived by Crytek. We expect the game to have stunning visuals because that is something the CryEngine makes possible.

Aside from that, the concept goes like this – there are five duos of bounty hunters whose task is to kill the demons located on the map, grab the loot and securely leave the location without getting killed by other teams. The dark atmosphere reminds us of games such as Resident Evil and the plot sounds brilliant, which is why we can’t wait for this release to hit the digital shelves.

A Way Out

Release Date: Q1 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Electronic Arts haven’t had good publicity lately due to issues with loot boxes, but it doesn’t change the fact that they publish pretty much only excellent games. A Way Out, designed by Hazelight Studios, present an intriguing concept that is exclusively multiplayer co-op. In fact, only two players can play it via split screen. That means you can use either an active internet connection or play offline, but you need to have a partner because both stories are told simultaneously.

Vincent and Leo are two main protagonists. We can’t say, heroes, because they are convicted prisoners. Their task is to escape from the prison and stay away from the police as long as possible. You will need to work as a team, but there will also be situations in which only one player will be playing, while the other is watching a cutscene.

Skull & Bones

Release Date: Q4 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Skull & Bones is a darker approach to the pirate theme in comparison to Sea of Thieves which has a positive note. Also, the game designed by Ubisoft will offer an extensive single-player campaign. Your task will be to become the most famous pirate captain in the waters of the Indian Ocean. Aside from that, you can also gather a crew of up to six players and fight in multiplayer battles in Disputed Waters. A pirate is not a pirate without treasure hunting, and that will also be one of the available online modes.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Linux, Mac

We expect the sequel to the original game to appear three years after the first release in the series. Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire is yet another game with a pirate theme scheduled to be released. You will be in charge of the Watcher who has telepathic powers. Your task is to explore the open-world waters with your pirate ship and find Eothas, a god who destroyed your home. The story picks up where the predecessor stopped, but the gameplay will undergo some changes. Those include improving AI, faster combat, different class systems, etc.

Forgotton Anne

Release Date: Q4 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

We love an indie game with a unique and creative idea. People from Square Enix apparently think the same because they will be publishing Throughline Games’ Forgotton, Anne. You will be taking a trip to The Forgotten Lands and meet creatures made of misplaced objects that want to be remembered again (such as lost socks). The developers describe the release as a cinematic adventure with some puzzle platform elements. Your goal is to make sure to return to the Human world and prevent the rebellion The Forgotten Lands.

State of Decay 2

Release Date: Q2 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One

It seems that we can never have enough of zombies in video games. However, some releases offer a satisfying amount of creativity and can provide us hours of fun. That was the case with The State of Decay five years ago, and that is why we are looking forward to the sequel. It’s a dark third-person survival game set in the zombie open world. Aside from the classic solo mode, you can also play in co-op with up to three other players.

Anthem

Release Date: Q4 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

We have to tell you that Anthem reminds us of Destiny. It seems that EA attempts to break into that market with the help of BioWare, the developers of the Mass Effect series. You will be a freelancer who agreed to leave the Earth to explore the galaxy in your exo-suit called Javelin. There are different types of these suits, and each packs superhuman abilities and various weapons. You will go both up into the air and down into the water as you fight monsters and other dangers while collecting loot. The solo campaign is also expected, but considering the shared world environment, the focus will be on co-op multiplayer.

UFO 50

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

Pay attention to the number 50 because that is how many games you will get in the UFO 50 package. That’s right; this is a compilation of small games that will take you through different genres, including RPG, puzzles, shoot ‘em up, and platforms. Developers from several indie companies joined forces to make this incredible collection that should be a mixture of the 8-bit visuals with modern design.

Octahedron

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

According to the description on the official website, this will be an unusual take on 2D platforms. For starters, the new mechanic will allow you to create platforms and precision will play a crucial role, considering that the levels will be vertical. You will also need to pay attention to music because both level elements and enemies will respond to it. Despite the fact that the game will be in 2D, the graphics look very attractive.

Ooblets

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One

We like when the developers don’t hide where they found the inspiration for their games. Ooblets is ‘technically’ a life simulation inspired by Animal Crossing and Pokemon. You will be living on a farm where you can grow friendly ooblets from seeds. You can also customize your character and house and run a shop. The other aspect of the game is turn-based fighting with the creatures you grew. There is an upgrade system for improving ooblets so that you can prepare them for the battles that wait around the corner.

Tunic

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

Is anyone up for another round of the Legend of Zelda? You are a small fox trying to find its way in a big world. That is not an easy task as wilderness brings many challenges and monsters that you will have to face. Aside from dealing with regular enemies and bosses, you will also embark on an adventure of exploring the ruins and wilderness of the world TUNIC.

The Bard’s Tale IV

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Linux, Mac

InXile Entertainment revived the dungeon crawler from decades ago. There is a modern twist, of course, because the classic turn-based fighting will be mixed with exploring a more open world environments. There will be about two dozens of available dungeons in a game that will be played from the first person. The users funded the Kickstarter campaign, and we expect the game soon.

Left Alive

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One

We don’t know about you, but we like the idea to match designers that worked on Metal Gear Solid, Ghost in the Shell, and Armored Core. That is what Square Enix did for their upcoming game Left Alive. Although its default genre is a shooter, the stealth and survival elements will mostly be represented in what we expect to be an MGS replica. Your task will be to stay alive during an invasion of giant robots set in the universe of Front Mission. Aside from the solo campaign, there will be multiplayer modes available, too, although there are no announcements about co-op.

Bloodstained Ritual of the Night

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PS Vita, OS X, Linux

We are not sure why there was a mass exodus from Konami, but Koji Igarashi, the producer of Castlevania, also left the studio. He is now bringing us a game that is a spiritual successor to his most successful release. You will be playing as Miriam, who uses a whip and an away of magic spells and abilities to fight enemies and bosses across multiple levels. It is a Castlevania look-alike with a different name.

Shenmue III

Release Date: Q4 2018

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4

It’s interesting to note that the original Shenmue was the most expensive game at the time. When it was released for Dreamcast in 1999, it cost almost $50 million. The second part followed two years later, but Sega’s financial troubles put the game on standby. Yu Suzuki, the creator of the series, acquired a license from Sega three years ago and started a Kickstarter campaign for the next installment in the series. Shenmue III will once again give us the chance to play as Ryo Hazuki and finally discover the mystery behind his father’s murder.

Jurassic World Evolution

Release Date: Q3 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

We already had a chance to build a theme park full of dinosaurs, but it was in 2003 when that happened the last time. Thanks to Frontier Developments, we will get a chance to do the same in Jurassic World Evolution. You will get to play across 29 locations on the Isla Nublar and the surrounding islands. Aside from constructing the theme park, you will also develop dinosaurs.

Monster Hunter World

Release Date: January 26, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

The fifth installment of the franchise marks the arrival of the Monster Hunter franchise to PC. Although the Windows version will appear later than the date that was set for the consoles, it will be worth it. Capcom will finally feature an open-world environment and no loading screen between the areas. Aside from that, the AI has been significantly improved, and the graphics also look stunning in the video footage.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Release Date: January 26, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

The latest take into the Dragon Ball genre is a fighting game developed in Unreal Engine 4. Each team consists of three characters, which gives you an increased array of fighting moves at your disposal. According to the information on the official website, it will be a 2.5D battle game with three separate story arcs. We will also see the androids make their return.

The Crew 2

Release Date: March 16, 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

It seems that 2017 was the year of racing simulations and there are not many of them announced for the next year. However, Ubisoft and Ivory Tower are there to fill that space with The Crew 2. You will roam the United States and fly cars, planes, boats, and bikes to dominate the country’s motorsports scene. You will be able to customize vehicles and take on various courses, including freestyle, street, and off-road racing.

Gravel

Release Date: Early 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

While we are on the topic of racing games, let’s mention Gravel. Milestone’s developing it in Unreal Engine 4, and it will offer a focus on off-road racing. There won’t be a lot of simulation involved, but the authors promise a whole lot of fun in this arcade racer that will also involve the stunt component.

Psychonauts 2

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Linux, Mac

We waited for over a decade for this sequel, and it is finally close to release! Psychonauts 2 is a platform game in which you control Raz, a creature that can read the other’s minds thanks to his psychic abilities. Levitation, pyrokinesis, and telekinesis are only some of the powers that you will use while you discover the mystery related to Raz’s history. Keep it a secret, but our hero will also fall in love during his adventure!

Anno 1800

Release Date: Winter 2018

Platforms: PC

You can say that this will be a reboot of the franchise. Anno 1800 returns the series to its roots by putting the player in the dawn of the Age of Industrialization. Your goal is to build your city and manage the challenges of the 19th-century politics that are rapidly evolving. It’s only up to you whether you want to be an oppressor, innovator, or liberator. The single-player campaign will be story-driven, but there will also be a sandbox mode.

Games That We Hope Will be released by the End of 2018

If you thought that this is the end of the list, you are wrong. Other games are also worth mentioning. However, they are announced for the very end of 2018, or their release date isn’t set yet. That means that there is a chance they won’t even be released by the end of the next year. But boy, do we hope that they will!

Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

It has been almost eight years since the original Mount & Blade: Warband. We were patient so far, and we will be for a while more if that’s what it takes to get an excellent sequel. The premise remains the same, and the game will still combine elements of RPG with action and strategy. The most significant overhaul is expected to be made to the cavalry combat, which will enable you to take a more active part in the battle. That will happen thanks to the command structure that you can use to delegate tasks for the overall fight to your computer-controlled teammates. As for the combat itself, chain attacks and a blocking system are only some of the improvements we are expecting.

Deep Sky Derelicts

Release Date: Early Access

Platforms: PC

The game is already released on Steam, but it’s only at 0.1.3 update, which means there is a long way to go until the full release. However, you can still generate a couple of playing hours if you purchase it immediately. The concept seems intriguing as your task is to gather a squad of three mercenaries that are exploring the outer space for a place to live and some food. As you explore the derelict alien ships and space station, you will encounter both friends and enemies that you need to defeat in turn-based battles.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

Release Date: TBA

Platforms: TBC

We don’t know much about this game at the moment, but it’s enough to know the title to be excited about it. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is not a sequel, but rather a prequel to the original. According to the information, we have so far; the RPG will allow you to rise through the rankings from the bottom of the society all the way up to a ship captain. Ubisoft also teases that we can expect multiplayer mode(s) to be added to the game.

Conan Exiles

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

It’s not like we didn’t have Conan-themed games before, but Conan Exiles is a survival open-world game set in the realm of our favorite barbarian. Considering that a PC version has been in early access for almost a year, we can only assume that it is close to a final release. Solo, co-op, and multiplayer are all available as you enjoy smashing the fortresses and killing the beasts and other enemies.

Battalion 1944

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Square Enix decided to publish the game from Bulkhead Interactive, which is a hint enough that this release might be a serious one. The Kickstarter campaign started in 2016, and we can expect an early access version soon. Battalion 1944 is an exclusively multiplayer FPS set in the 1940s during the Second World War. According to the developers, the loot boxes will restrict to cosmetic changes, while keeping the gaming experience solely skill-based.

Cyberpunk 2077

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

The Witcher is a franchise full of impressive games, and their developers have announced that they are working on an entirely new release. According to the information we have from CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 will be an RPG filled with action. There will be an immersive story wrapped into a solo campaign in an impressively substantial open world, but the game will have multiplayer modes included, too. However, the developers reassured everyone that they would “leave the greed to others” while focusing on delivering a proper gaming experience.

Ashes of Creation

Release Date: 2018

Platforms: PC

The idea is more than exciting as long as Intrepid Studios manages to transfer it into a playable final product. Ashes of Creation is an MMO where players have the main word on their servers. The governments formed by gamers will allow them to create unique narratives and quests securing a different gaming experience. However, you will have to defend your community from others in multiplayer battles to make sure your effort isn’t ruined.

Artifact

Release Date: TBA

Platforms: TBC

Valve decided it’s the right time to launch a Dota-themed collectible card game. The artifact will offer an experience similar to Hearthstone, but with an important twist. There will be a touch of MOBA thanks to the fact that you will be able to build barracks, lanes, and creeps. You will control five heroes across three game boards. There will be spells and creature cards, while creeps will spawn after each turn.

Death Stranding

Release Date: TBA

Platforms: PlayStation 4

The first game created by Hideo Kojima after he left Konami. His company Kojima Productions agreed with Sony to exclusively publish their new action game Death Stranding with PlayStation 4. We don’t know much apart from the fact that the Decima engine is used to design the game and that it will feature both solo and multiplayer modes. It will be an open-world environment, while the two trailers reveal some intriguing details, such as a fetus in a jar in the hands of Guillermo Del Toro.

Besides programming and cars, I love video games and I have a huge passion for tech. That's why I'm up to date with every new thing that comes out. In my spare time I write because I enjoy sharing my ideas and thoughts with people.
