Days Gone E3 Expo 2017 Gameplay And Release Date For PS4

Sony Hits With Another Great Exclusive

Sony has always had a bunch of exclusive franchises for its PlayStation consoles, but what we always loved about them is that they weren’t afraid of creating new series and heroes to present to the public. The E3 Expo 2017 saw a lot of developers and publishers present exciting upcoming game, but one of the presentations we were looking forward the most was Days Gone, which will be the next PlayStation 4 exclusive. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a release date but here is what we found out about the new action adventure.

SIE Bend Studios is the team behind Days Gone. You might know them from Syphon Filter (yes, we all loved that series, too!), which is the last IP they worked on. That means that DG is put in safe hands of people who know how to launch a franchise. Here’s what they showed us at their booth at E3.

Days Gone First Impressions

The demo we saw portrays the post-apocalyptic world of the game. As we already know, the main protagonist of Days Gone is Deacon St. John, who will explore the open world within the game. The disaster was of cataclysmic amounts, and the few people that remained were forced to withdraw to encampments to survive. Our hero is not like that; he is a drifter that prefers to wander the paths of the destroyed world and follow his path.

Zombies

The problem is that the world is full of Freakers, who were the byproduct of a global pandemic that occurred when the world went through a catastrophe. They are former humans that are now creatures that remind of zombies (yes, it seems that you can’t avoid zombies anywhere anymore). The demo discovered the reason why Deacon left the survivor encampment. While he was in one of the camps, he found out that bandits kidnapped his close friend Manny. That is why Deacon decides to go on a rescue mission to save his friend.

Gameplay Demo

The demo we see nicely portrays the open world of the upcoming game. Day Gone uses Unreal 4 engine, so there are some nifty features, such as dynamic weather and day/night cycle. We got to see the snowy environment, which truly looks breathtaking. Deacon rides his bike in the video, but there will be other vehicles at your disposal, too. In the demo, he rides it up to the top of the hill, where he takes out his binoculars to see what’s going on on the bridge in the vicinity. He manages to see a wire placed by the bandits to ambush someone for the loot. The gangsters are hiding in the nearby bushes, and after locating them, he goes around and surprises them. We witness a melee combat in which our hero comes out as a winner. Soon, he notices a trail from the bike that belonged to Manny, so he follows it to a bandit camp nearby.

More Zombies

The adventure takes us to the mentioned camp where we notice the bandits gathered around the fire. Deacon places a bear trap and throws a rock to make some noise. One of the gangsters goes to check what is going on and sticks his foot in the trap. The others come to rescue him, and Deacon uses this time to find some supplies in the gang’s tents. He gets a Molotov cocktail and hides in the bushes again. The gang is merciless and kills the member stuck in the bear trap because he is making too much noise, which could attract the Freakers. Once they return to the fire, Deacon throws the Molotov into it and kills them all.

Unfortunately, his friend isn’t in this camp, so he goes to the next one. Deacon uses a sniper rifle to kill a couple of the bandits, but when that’s noticed in camp, he moves to AK 47 as the weapon of choice. Although it might not have been the best decision, it is obvious that this was done so that we could see the pace of the action in Days Gone. In short, you should move from one cover to another and kill all the enemies.

You can pick up the ammunition and weapons your foes drop once you kill them. Not all the opponents are the same – some of the bandits wear heavy armor, which means it will take a lot of effort to take them down. Once Deacon releases his friend Manny, they head out from the camp only to end up fighting a bear, which is where the presentation ended.

Days Gone Presentation Review

The new gameplay footage confirms several things we already knew about Days Gone. First of all, the game looks fantastic. Just as other PS4 exclusives like Horizon Zero Dawn or Uncharted(which by the way is getting a DLC). That doesn’t come as strange because it uses all the benefits of the PS4 Pro 4K support to provide some stunning graphics. Next, the game allows you to choose how to solve each challenge that it puts in front of you. If you want to go in guns blazing, you can do that, but if you prefer a more sophisticated approach, like torching the entire gang with a Molotov while you are hiding in the bushes, that is also a valid move.

Days Gone Gameplay

We still have to see some gameplay footage involving fighting the Freakers, but we do have some new information about them. The developers revealed at E3 that their density would depend on the time of the day, and they might be stronger during the cold (Game of Thrones, anyone?). The trouble will also come when it is raining because there will be more bandit ambushes then, as well as some other dynamic events. On the other hand, it will be easier to sneak up on Freakers when the rain can cover your tracks.

The Conclusion

The whole idea of Days Gone lies in the desire to provide as dynamic events as possible. There is the main story to follow, but there is also a bunch of side missions, and a lot of things will influence what is happening in the open world within the game, such as the weather and the path you choose.

All this is more than enough for us to eagerly await the release of Days Gone. Unfortunately, we don’t know when this third person action game will see the light of the day, but we expect to see it by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
